ここは、静岡県三島市の源兵衛川（げんべえがわ）。三島駅前の市立公園「楽寿園」に湧き出す、富士山の伏流水を水源とし、町を縫うように流れて中郷温水池（ため池）へと至る、全長およそ1.5kmの農業用水路です。富士山からの湧き水だけあって、水温は年間を通して15〜16℃。夏はひんやり心地よく、冬はぬくもりを感じるほど。何より、水が驚くほど澄んでいます。川の中には飛び石や木道が整備され、「せせらぎ散歩」を楽しむ人々の姿も。初夏にはホタルが舞い、夏には子どもたちが水遊びに興じ、大人たちも足を水に浸して涼を味わいます。すぐ脇を伊豆箱根鉄道駿豆線（三島〜修善寺）が走り、おしゃれなカフェや昔ながらのスナック、名店「うなぎの桜家」などが軒を連ねる一角もあります。「水の都・三島」の名にふさわしい、自然と人の暮らしが寄り添う風景です。水辺を歩くだけで、心がほどけていく。そんな場所がここにあります。
This is Genbegawa, a gentle stream flowing through Mishima City in Shizuoka Prefecture.
It begins in Rakujuen Park, just outside Mishima Station, where clear spring water from Mt. Fuji surfaces after a long journey underground.
From there, the stream winds quietly through the town, stretching about 1.5 kilometers before reaching the Nakagō Reservoir. Originally built as an irrigation channel, today it’s also a beloved part of the city’s everyday life.
Fed by Mt. Fuji’s pure springs, the water remains a steady 15 to 16°C throughout the year—refreshingly cool in summer, and pleasantly warm in winter.
Above all, it’s astonishingly clear.
Stepping stones and wooden walkways are built across the water, inviting people to enjoy a slow stroll along the stream’s gentle murmur.
In early summer, fireflies begin to dance in the dusk.
Children play in the shallows, and adults sit by the edge, dipping their feet into the flow to savor its cooling touch.
Just beside the stream, the Izuhakone Railway Sūnzu Line runs between Mishima and Shuzenji.
There are cozy cafés, nostalgic little bars, and even the famous unagi restaurant “Sakuraya,” each adding to the charm of this riverside neighborhood.
It’s a place where nature and daily life gently intertwine—
A scene truly worthy of Mishima’s name as the “City of Water.”
Here, even a simple walk along the water can quietly untangle the heart.
