ここは、富士五湖のひとつ、本栖湖です。本来は、2025年のダイヤモンド富士を撮影するために、田貫湖へ向かっていました。夜明け前に到着したのですが、すでに駐車場は満車で、路上にも車がずらりと並んでいました。月曜日だったのに、驚きました。ここ数年、富士山周辺では写真を撮る人が本当に増えていて、こうしたことも珍しくなくなってきました。
私は混雑した場所で撮影するのがあまり得意ではないので、すぐにUターンして本栖湖へ向かうことにしました。本栖湖に着くと、あたりは深い霧に包まれていました。けれど、それはどこか普通の霧とは違うように感じられました。空を見上げると、雲ひとつない青空が広がっていて、霧は湖面のすぐ上にだけ、静かに溜まっていました。誰もいない湖畔で、ひとり機材をセッティングしました。霧は、ただそこに漂っているだけなのに、不思議な存在感がありました。まるで、その向こう側に何か大切なものが隠れているような気さえしました。
やがて太陽が昇ると、霧はゆっくりと、音もなく消えていきました。
田貫湖でのダイヤモンド富士には出会えませんでしたが、この日の本栖湖で見た光景は、むしろそれ以上に心に残るものとなりました。
自然は、思い通りにはなりません。けれど、思いがけず与えられる風景には、ときにそれ以上のメッセージが込められているのだと思います。
まさに「不立文字」です。
This is Lake Motosu-ko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes.
Originally, I had set out to photograph the “Diamond Fuji” of 2025 from Lake Tanuki-ko.
I arrived before dawn, only to find the parking lot already full and cars lined up along the roadside—even though it was a Monday.
In recent years, the number of photographers around Mt. Fuji has increased dramatically, so scenes like this are no longer unusual.
I’m not very good at taking pictures in crowded places, so I quickly made a U-turn and headed to Lake Motosu-ko instead.
When I arrived, the area was wrapped in a deep fog.
But it felt different from ordinary mist—somehow more profound.
Looking up, I saw a perfectly clear blue sky.
The fog was quietly gathered just above the surface of the lake, and nowhere else.
Alone on the silent lakeshore, I set up my equipment.
The fog simply drifted there, yet it had a strange presence—
as if something important was hidden just beyond its veil.
As the sun slowly rose, the fog began to vanish—
softly, silently, without a trace.
I didn’t get to capture the Diamond Fuji at Lake Tanuki-ko,
but the scene I encountered at Lake Motosu-ko that morning left a deeper impression on my heart.
Nature rarely goes as planned.
But the unexpected landscapes it offers can sometimes carry messages far more meaningful than anything we imagined.
Truly, it was a moment of furyu—Zen-like silence, just like furyu monji.
