港に立ちこめる濃い朝靄。
窓を開けた瞬間、削り節のような香りがふわっと漂ってきました。
ここは熊本県・天草下島の最南端、牛深町の北東に位置する深海港。
今回は前日にロケハンができず、Googleマップを頼りに夜明け前の県道26号線を北上しました。海沿いを走るこの道は驚くほど狭く、すれ違いも難しいほど。きっと地元の人たちが軽トラックで行き来する生活道路なのでしょう。
港に近づくにつれ、あたり一面に濃い霧。
まるで毛嵐のように立ち上る湯気の中に、削り節の香りが漂っていました。
後で調べてみると、牛深町はサバ節やイワシ節など「雑節」の生産量日本一の町。
あの朝靄は、節の加工から立ち上る湯気だったのかもしれません。
三方を海に囲まれた港町・牛深。
静かな朝の空気の中で、天草の海はゆっくりと目覚めていきました。
ここに美しき日本があります。

Thick morning mist filled the harbor.
The moment I opened the window, a gentle aroma—like dried bonito flakes—drifted through the air.
This is Fukami Port, located northeast of Ushibuka Town at the southern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Since I couldn’t scout the location the day before, I relied on Google Maps and drove north along Prefectural Route 26 before dawn. The coastal road was incredibly narrow, barely wide enough for cars to pass each other—likely a small local road used daily by residents in their light trucks.
As I approached the harbor, dense mist covered everything.
Steam-like vapor rose from the port, carrying the scent of bonito flakes.
Later I learned that Ushibuka is Japan’s number one producer of zatsubushi—dried fish flakes made from mackerel and sardines.
The mysterious mist that morning may have been steam rising from the processing of these fish.
Ushibuka is a small port town surrounded by the sea on three sides.
In the quiet morning air, the sea of Amakusa slowly awakened.
Here lies a beautiful piece of Japan.
