ここは山梨県甲府市北部に位置する昇仙峡。長い年月をかけて浸食された花崗岩の断崖や、奇岩・奇石が連なる景勝地で、その間を豊富な水が流れています。実はこの昇仙峡は、日本における水晶発祥の地としても知られています。山梨では古くから水晶が利用されており、縄文時代には狩猟の道具や装飾品として用いられました。明治時代になると発掘が本格化し、甲府は水晶の研磨・加工技術で発展を遂げ、日本一の宝飾の街としての地位を確立しました。
かつて金峰山一帯には数多くの水晶鉱山が存在していたからでしょうか、昇仙峡の独特な風景にはどこか神秘的な魅力があります。同じ花崗岩でも、その質感や色合い、さらに川の石さえもこのエリアでは他とは異なるように感じられます。断崖に生える草木の様子も独特で、まるでこの地の特別な歴史や自然環境が影響を与えているかのようです。やはり「水晶発祥の地」という特別な背景が関係しているのかもしれませんね。
昇仙峡では、仙娥滝や石門、覚円峰といった名所を巡る遊歩道が整備されており、散策を楽しむのにも最適です。この豊かな自然と歴史が息づく場所で、ゆったりとした時間を過ごしてみるのもいいもんですよ。
Here lies Shosenkyo, located in the northern part of Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture. This scenic spot features granite cliffs, shaped by countless years of erosion, as well as curious rock formations and boulders. Between them flows a rich, abundant stream of water. Shosenkyo is also renowned as the birthplace of Japan’s crystal industry. In Yamanashi, crystals have been utilized since ancient times, dating back to the Jomon period when they were used for hunting tools and ornaments. By the Meiji era, mining efforts intensified, and Kofu developed its reputation for crystal polishing and processing, becoming Japan’s leading hub for jewelry craftsmanship.
Perhaps due to the many crystal mines that once dotted the Kinpozan area, Shosenkyo’s unique landscape exudes a mysterious allure. Even though granite is common, its texture, color, and even the river stones in this area seem distinctly different. The way vegetation grows on the cliffs also stands out, almost as if the area’s unique history and natural environment have left a profound imprint. It may well be that the special background as the “birthplace of crystals” has shaped this extraordinary charm.
Shosenkyo is also home to well-maintained walking trails that allow visitors to explore iconic spots such as the Sengataki Waterfall, Ishimon Gate, and Kakuenpo Peak. It’s an ideal place to enjoy a leisurely stroll and soak in the serene blend of abundant nature and rich history. Why not take some time to unwind in this enchanting setting?
