ここは福井県坂井市にある日本有数の観光名所、東尋坊。南北に約1キロ、高さ最大25メートルの切り立った断崖が連なるこの場所を、僕は何度か訪れた記憶があります。特に鮮明に覚えているのは、小学生の頃、冬に訪れたときのことです。あの時見た東尋坊は、まさに自然の恐怖を感じさせる場所でした。荒れ狂う海に砕け散る波、断崖を響き渡る轟音。それらが幼い僕には強烈な印象を残しました。
しかし、今回久しぶりに訪れた東尋坊は、かつての記憶にあった迫力とは少し違って見えました。それは、まるで何十年ぶりかに母校を訪れたときのような感覚です。小学生の頃に大きいと感じた校舎が、大人になった今では小さく見えるように、記憶の中でのスケール感が現実とは違っていたのです。小学生だった僕にとっては、東尋坊は圧倒的な迫力を持つ場所でしたが、成長した今ではその印象が少し薄らいでいました。
とはいえ、今回の訪問で新たな発見がありました。それは、日本海の美しい夕景です。この季節の日本海は穏やかで、空と海が澄み渡り、水平線までくっきりと見渡せました。ゆっくりと沈む太陽が空と海の色を刻々と変化させ、優しい風が頬を撫でるその光景は、思わず息をのむほどの美しさでした。
あの冬の日に心に刻まれた荒々しい東尋坊の記憶は、この日の穏やかで美しい景色によって、新たに上書きされた気がします。
This is Tojinbo, one of Japan’s most famous tourist attractions, located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. Stretching about one kilometer from north to south, with cliffs reaching up to 25 meters in height, I have memories of visiting this place several times. One memory, in particular, stands out: a visit during winter when I was still a child in elementary school. Back then, Tojinbo seemed like a place that embodied the terrifying power of nature. The crashing waves of the raging sea, the thunderous sound echoing off the cliffs—these left a vivid impression on my young mind.
However, when I visited Tojinbo again after many years, the overwhelming intensity I remembered seemed somewhat different. It felt similar to revisiting my old elementary school after decades had passed. The school buildings that once seemed so large as a child now felt surprisingly small, a clear reminder of how my perception had changed as I grew. As an elementary school student, Tojinbo was a place of sheer grandeur, but now, as an adult, it felt less imposing than I remembered.
Even so, this visit brought a new discovery: the breathtaking beauty of the sunset over the Sea of Japan. During this season, the sea was calm, and the sky and water were crystal clear, with the horizon visible in sharp detail. Watching the sun slowly set, painting the sky and ocean in ever-changing hues, and feeling the gentle wind brushing against my cheeks was a profoundly beautiful experience that took my breath away.
The memory of that fierce Tojinbo from a winter long ago has now been replaced by the serene and stunning scenery I witnessed this time.
